Tension mounts in Etah as Dalit alleges assault after vandalisation of Kalyan Singh’s statue

Tension mounted in Mohanpur and adjoining villages in Etah district on Wednesday (April 16, 2025) after members of Dalit community were allegedly assaulted by individuals from the Lodhi community a day after vandalisation of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister late Kalyan Singh’s statue located on the Jalesar-Isauli road.

The vandalisation of Kalyan Singh’s statue occurred on April 14 night, when some unidentified people in a procession allegedly pelted stones at the statue located on the Jalesar-Isauli road, leading to outrage within the Lodhi community, from which the former U.P. CM hails. Some members of Dalit community alleged that anti-social elements from the Lodhi community forcibly entered their homes in Mohanpur village under the Jalesar police station on April 15 night, in the presence of police and assaulted the residents, including women and children.

However, local police dismissed the allegations of the Dalit community people, describing them as baseless. “No such beatings happened in the presence of the police and legal action is being taken regarding the vandalisation of the statue,” Jalesar Station House Officer (SHO) Sudhir Kumar Raghav.

Special security measures is in place with deployment of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) in Mohanpur and adjoining villages.
