Surprise showers lash several parts of Chennai on Wednesday

Showers accompanied by winds, thunder, and lightening across Chennai brought some relief from the searing heat of the past few days on Wednesday (April 16, 2025) morning. Places like Tambaram and Meenambakkam saw intense showers due to the thunderstorms. 

P. Senthamarai Kannan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Chennai, said these rains were due to a deep convection caused by a convergence of Westerly winds from a trough and Easterly winds from the sea. They will last for a few hours depending on the availability of moisture and how far the winds will support the moisture.

In a post on social media platform X, weather blogger Pradeep John described it as a rare April thunderstorm for the city. He recalled how on 15 April 2015 too the city had experienced a cloudburst and recorded 100 mm of rain. 

On Wednesday, South Chennai bore the brunt of the storm, he said.
