Detailing how they met, Rinku said, “Since 2013, I’ve been associated with the BJP organizationally. When he was an MLA-MP, I never spoke to him. At that time, I worked at the block level. We first spoke just before the 2021 elections at Eco Park—very casually. During this Lok Sabha election, we spoke a bit more. Very ordinary interactions, nothing beyond that.”
“Around mid-September, when I was thinking about settling down, I proposed to him. My conditions were: it has to be someone within New Town, and he must accept my political career. While thinking through all this, he came to mind. He is the most eligible bachelor in my constituency. He’s not like the usual political figures. He’s a very good person—very honest, strong. I really liked these qualities and thought, why not propose to him?”
When asked if Dilip Ghosh accepted her proposal right away, she denied, stating that he did not show interest initially and spoke to his mother before giving an answer.
“No… no… no. He took some time. I had asked him. Initially, he didn’t show interest. Then he took three months, spoke to his mother. After that, he informed me,” she said.
Recalling how their acquaintance turned into a relationship, the bride-to-be said, “In September, when I was thinking about my future, I started thinking about the right kind of person. I’ve waited 17 years, fulfilled all my responsibilities and duties. Now it’s time to think about myself. For that, I needed a suitable person. While searching, I couldn’t think of anyone. But when I started matching my standards, I saw that he’s also in politics like me, a bachelor, a resident of New Town, and he would have to let me continue in politics.”.
“Since 2013, I’ve been working at the block level, and from there I gradually moved up to the Mahila Morcha. I’ve known him since then, but it was always a very formal acquaintance. When he lost the election, I started going to the park more often. Because when one is in power, there’s always a crowd. After he was out of power, I felt it was right for me to go. I used to go often on moral grounds. Around mid-September, I proposed to him,” Rinku added.
Did Dilip Ghosh Accept The Proposal Immediately? Rinku Majumdar Responds
She said that the BJP leader took about three months to respond to her proposal.
“We were talking. He took about three months. He prepared himself mentally. In our conversations, he tried to understand and know me better. Then he felt that I was suitable for him. After that, he made his own decision and discussed it with his mother before letting me know. He’s very concerned about his mother—like, who will take care of her when he’s away?”
She further informed that the wedding will follow Hindu rituals, and it will be a simple marriage.
“Our wedding will follow Hindu rituals. There will be a registration after the wedding. The ceremony will be held at Dilip Ghosh’s residence in New Town with both families. No show-off. It will be a very simple, Vedic wedding,” she said.
When inquired why she chose Dilip Ghosh, Rinku said, “I have a son. I’ve dedicated my whole life to him. For 17 years, I’ve done all my duties. At a very important moment, I decided I needed to reach a conclusion. Who would be the right person? The mistake I made at 17—at this age, I can’t make that mistake again. I wanted someone dignified, whose mentality would match with mine. I also have a responsibility toward my society.”
As the news of his scheduled wedding spread on Thursday, reporters asked Dilip Ghosh about it, to which he replied, “Why, can’t I get married? Is getting married a crime?”
