Amid the ongoing unrest in West Bengal’s Murshidabad during protests against the Waqf Amendment Act, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attacked the Mamata Banerjee government, saying, “Bengal is burning” and its Chief Minister is “silent”.

He further added that the only cure for rioters is a “danda” (stick). Using the Hindi idiom, Adityanath said, “Laton ke bhoot baaton se kahan manne wale hain (Those who understand only force, won’t understand words),”

Addressing a gathering in Hardoi, Adityanath said, “Bengal is burning. The Chief Minister of the state is silent. She calls rioters ‘messengers of peace’. In the name of secularism, they have given complete freedom to rioters to create unrest. The entire Murshidabad has been on fire for the last week, yet the government remains silent. Such anarchy must be brought under control.”

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister also thanked the Calcutta High Court for ordering the deployment of central forces “immediately” in Murshidabad.

“I thank the judiciary there for deploying central forces to ensure the safety of the minority Hindus in the area. The Congress is silent on the riots in Murshidabad. The Samajwadi Party is also quiet,” he added.

Three people were killed at Murshidabad and homes of many families were destroyed as the protests against the Waqf law amendments turned violent.

Yogi Adityanath also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for passing the Waqf Amendment Act.

“We are grateful to PM Modi and Amit Shah, who, by passing the Waqf Amendment Act,

have put an end to the looting of poor people’s land. Now, the recovered land will be used to build hospitals, houses for the poor, schools, and universities. The looting of land has come to an end, and that’s why these people are upset,” he added.

Samajwadi Party Reacts

Responding to Yogi Adityanath’s comments, SP leader IP Singh questioned the language of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and accused him of trying to divide the country.

Taking to X, Singh said, “This is the language of a Baba Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Those who understand the language of force won’t understand words. Tell the Home Minister to deploy Central Security Forces in the violence-hit areas of Bengal and kill them by firing bullets. People like Yogi Adityanath want another partition of the country.”

“They are unable to stop gangrapes and riots in UP and are now giving inflammatory statements against West Bengal,” he added.

Mamata Banerjee Urges Calm

Meanwhile, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed for peace and asked people to refrain from any “unrighteous behaviour in the name of religion.” She said that the law in question has been brought by the Centre, and not the state government.

“Every human life is precious, do not incite riots for the sake of politics. Those who are inciting riots are harming society,” said Banerjee in an X post.
