The Nelamangala Rural police have registered a suo motu case against the management of a rehabilitation centre after a video of a staff allegedly torturing a resident, after he refused to comply with their orders, went viral on social media.

Taking cognisance of the incident, two cases have been registered against the staff and the management of Sai Freedom Foundation. While one pertains to the assault on the resident, another case is against the owner of the centre using a sword to cut his birthday cake, C.K. Baba, SP, Bengaluru Rural district said.

The incidents reportedly occurred a few days ago and the resident has been admitted to hospital.

The residents and family members alleged that the staff beat them brutally in the garb of rehabilitation if they did not agree to do menial jobs.

The police said that they were verifying the allegations to ascertain if the centre, recognised by the State government, had violated norms.

The police on Tuesday visited the centre and inquired with the residents and staff as part of the investigation.
