Sara Joseph’s Worlds – a grand celebration of a literary icon’s legacy

The vibrant literary journey, activism, and relentless spirit of writer and activist Sara Joseph will be celebrated in a two-day event, “Sara Joseph’s Worlds: Life, Writing, Resistance,” at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Hall on Saturday and Sunday.

The event will feature a series of sessions, including seminars, tributes, discussions with social and political activists, cultural performances, and competitions in art and essay writing, all dedicated to honouring Ms. Joseph’s life, work, and unwavering resistance.

The opening ceremony on Saturday at 10 a.m. will be presided over by Kerala Sahitya Akademi president K. Satchidanandan, with Kannada author Banu Mushtaq inaugurating the function. Telugu author Volga will be the special guest, while prominent personalities, including writers M. Mukundan, A. S. Madhavan, M. V. Sreyams Kumar, Sharadakutty, Khadeeja Mumtaz, K. Ajitha, Asad, P. Balachandran, MLA., P. A. Gopikrishnan, Peppin Thomas, Jeevan Kumar, and O. P. Suresh, will share their insights.

Closing ceremony

The closing ceremony on Sunday at 5 p.m. will be presided over by activist Kusumam Joseph. The event will be inaugurated by Tamil poet and MP Kanimozhi. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan and Higher Education Minister R. Bindu will be chief guests. Revenue Minister K. Rajan will present the honours, while Mayor M. K. Varghese will adorn the guests with ponnada. Notable figures like K. K. Rama, C. P. John, Najma Tabshir, Rafiq Ahmed, V. S. Prince , C. V. Balakrishnan, P. V. Krishnan Nair, Sheeba Amir, Bina R. Chandran, T. D. Ramakrishnan, V. K. Sreeram, and Ravunni will extend their heartfelt greetings.

Over the two days, seminars will delve into Ms. Joseph’s literary masterpieces, exploring her profound influence. On Saturday, a friendly gathering of her peers, readers, and disciples will engage in discussions about her literary journey and activism, with participation from K. Venu, P. Geetha, A. K. Jayashree, Bhadrakumari, K. M. Sheeba, and others. On Sunday afternoon, an inspiring activists’ assembly will be moderated by Ammini K. of Wayanad.

Ghazal night

Saturday evening will feature a ghazal night by Siraj Amal at 6:30 p.m., adding a musical touch to the celebrations.

In addition, an exhibition showcasing all of Ms. Joseph’s books will be open for public viewing. The award ceremony will honour the winners of the essay competition themed around her novel Daughters of Alaha and a painting contest inspired by characters from Ms. Joseph’s works.
